The Village of Hazelton, referred to locally as “Old Hazelton” or “Old Town” is located at the confluence of the Skeena and Bulkley Rivers in the Gitksan territory. The Village of Hazelton and the Village of Gitanmaax share a unique relationship due to boundaries, services and people being intertwined. One of the oldest European communities in northern BC, the Village of Hazelton has historical significance and is situated in the recreation-rich Upper Skeena. Mountain biking, fishing, hiking trails and outdoor adventure opportunities abound. In 2019, the Upper Skeena Recreation Centre, a $20 million dollar community centre and ice arena opened to the community. This incredible project is a proud example of the partnerships in the region that have come together to create a healthy, attractive and livable community.
