This full-time position is shared between the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District (ACRD) and the Canadian Mental Health Association of Port Alberni. Reporting to the Executive Director and the General Manager of Administrative Services, the Human Resource Manager is a strategic partner leading the development, implementation, and management of HR projects, initiatives, and policies. This work includes guiding and supporting all levels of management and employees on addressing a broad and diverse range of HR and occupational safety activities spanning both unionized and non-unionized staff.

 

WHERE IS THE JOB?

The ACRD encompasses the essence of “West Coast” living, spanning municipalities of Tofino, Ucluelet, the City of Port Alberni, four Treaty First Nation groups, and six electoral areas. The Canadian Mental Health Association of Port Alberni promotes the mental health of all and supports the resilience and recovery of people experiencing mental illness.  Between the two organizations, the HR Manager will work in Port Alberni, BC primarily at 3008 Fifth Avenue and at 3178 – 2nd Avenue, with options for a hybrid/remote work environment.

 

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?

The HR Manager supports the development and implementation of HR initiatives, policies, and systems while fostering a safe, inclusive, and values-driven workplace culture. This role provides strategic guidance on recruitment, onboarding, performance management, and compliance with employment laws. The HR Manager also plays a key role in executive planning, labor relations, workplace investigations, and occupational health and safety, while advising leadership on best HR practices and supporting organizational training and development efforts.

WHAT DO YOU BRING TO THE TEAM?

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in labour relations in a unionized environment, preferably in a non-profit or government sector.
  • Knowledge of HR functions, labour laws and progressive management procedures.
  • Excellent written, verbal/presentation, and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of current computer and software systems, with the ability to problem solve challenges.
  • Considerable knowledge of recruitment, compensation and benefits administration, employee and labour relations, job evaluation, performance and attendance management, conflict resolution, collective agreement interpretation, human resources related legislation.
  • Proficient in the use of computers (e.g. Word, Excel and Outlook).
  • A team player’s attitude, with a strong work ethic and a generally positive outlook toward new concepts and innovation in the workplace.
