WHERE IS THE JOB?

Located on southern Vancouver Island, North Cowichan employs 450 staff and is home to just over 31,000 residents. The Municipality sits right between Nanaimo and Victoria, and is a community of communities, so you will have a direct hand in impacting the lives of Chemainus, Crofton, Maple Bay, and South End/University Village. Your office will be in Duncan on the Trans-Canada Highway, meaning an easy commute home in any direction.

WHAT WILL YOU BE DOING?

You will focus on the short and long-term planning of water, sanitary, drainage/flood protection, and roads/active transportation infrastructure. You’ll support the infrastructure design and construction section, and support the Operations Department with the operation and maintenance of all water, sanitary, drainage/flood protection, and roads/active transportation assets. With your degree in Engineering and your P.Eng. or P.Eng. limited designation, you’ll use your expertise to lead the way in:

  • Water, sanitary, drainage modelling, transportation modelling.
  • Asset management processes.
  • Conceptual and Preliminary design of infrastructure.
  • Assist in the operations and maintenance of sanitary and water treatment systems.
  • Servicing assessments for land development applications.
  • Management of designated departmental staff. 
  • Quantity take-offs and cost estimating.

 

WHAT WILL YOU GET OUT OF IT?

  • A competitive annual wage of $110,304 – $120,532 (2024 rates) and a comprehensive (dare we say, outstanding) benefits package including:
      • Vacation starting at 20 days per year (pro-rated in the first year)
      • Compensatory lieu time available and evaluated annually
      • Additional banked time between the months of April to September (taken as time off or paid out)
      • Immediate enrollment in the Municipal Pension Plan 
      • Reimbursement for relocation expenses, negotiable with the Employer
      • Coverage for professional development and memberships, negotiable with the Employer
  • This position is eligible for the Municipality of North Cowichan’s flexible Remote Work program, offering a great balance of flexibility and collaboration. Employees can work from locations within a two-hour commutable distance of the Municipality’s worksite. Based in Duncan, BC, this position allows employees to request a hybrid schedule after completing an initial in-office training period. Remote work is subject to approval and operational needs, with the number of remote workdays tailored to operational requirements.

WHAT DO YOU BRING TO THE TEAM?

  • Ability to thrive in a team environment.
  • Demonstrable ability to keep accurate records and notes to prepare conceptual and preliminary drawings, other utility records, spreadsheets using Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and other programs.
  • Demonstrable ability to manage direct engineering and project team staff in a unionized environment.
  • Independence of judgement and capacity of working with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrable ability to present complex technical and financial materials to senior leadership and Council.
